Two Delmarva players have recently enjoyed big wins in the Maryland Lottery, and here are the stories of where they bought their winning tickets and how they plan to spend their winnings.

'Mama D' wins big in three-day-old ticket bought in Fruitland

When a store clerk suggested she buy the three-day-old $5,000,000 Fortune scratch-off, a lucky lady who goes by the nickname “Mama D” figured she’d give the $50 instant ticket a try. The Salisbury-area resident bought the game, along with some other scratch-offs, and found herself $100,000 richer.

Salisbury-area resident "Mama D" recently won $100,000 in the Maryland Lottery's $5,000,000 Fortune game.

The Eastern Shore resident bought the instant tickets at one of her regular Lottery retailers in Wicomico County. The helpful clerk works at Royal Farms located at 101 West Cedar Lane in Fruitland.

“Let this be a big win,” “Mama D” recalls saying to herself while still in the store as she prepared to reveal a potential fortune on the $50 game. After seeing one of her numbers match a winning number, followed by another match, she grew more confident of “a big win.” After racking up 10 matches at $10,000 a pop, she was quite excited about her $100,000 prize.

The happy player called family members to share the exiting news of her win. She has not made any plans yet for her prize. An employee of the federal government since 2008, “Mama D” also works a part-time job.

For now, she plans to put her windfall into her savings account. When not working or playing Lottery games, “Mama D” enjoys knitting and spending time with family members.

The $5,000,000 Fortune scratch-off went on sale Feb. 10 with three $5,000,000 top prizes, which are still available, and nine $100,000 prizes. Eight second-tier prizes remain. Also awaiting discovery are all nine $50,000 prizes, 90 $10,000 prizes and others ranging from $50 to $5,000.

Nurse and fiancé celebrate big win with ticket bought in Delmar

A nurse and her fiancé went from an adrenaline rush to an actual money rush in the form of a $50,000 payday. The Delaware woman stopped at a nearby Maryland Lottery retailer, where she purchased a winning Money Rush scratch-off worth $50,000.

The Sussex County resident bought four of the $10 Money Rush instant tickets at the Corner Market located at 1 South Bi-State Boulevard in Delmar. Later in the day, she scratched off her games. One of the four instant tickets had a matching number 22 with a $1,000 prize plus a 50X multiplier, appearing to give her a $50,000 second-tier prize.

With a rush of excitement, she wanted to confirm what she and her fiancé were seeing, so they returned to the lottery retailer to scan the scratch-off’s prize check area. The scan confirmed what they saw but they still could not believe it, the lucky lady told Lottery officials.

The Delaware native said she plans to use some of her winnings to pay bills, will save some of the funds and use some of the windfall to take care of her children.

The Money Rush instant ticket went on sale in July 2024. There are still nearly two dozen big prizes remaining unclaimed, including five $100,000 top prizes, four $50,000 prizes and 14 $10,000 prizes.
